This activities represent a risk to the un-informed participant, as they say on Mythbusters, don't do this, ever. I will not divulge how I did it, what fuel I used or what percentages where used. These were done in controlled conditions with full PPE (including ear protection where appropriate). These are not for entertainment, they demonstrate valid point governing the use of CGI's and LFL. DO NOT TRY TO REPLICATE THESE ACTIVITIES. No small animals were harned in the taping of these explosions.
Each of these video clips are done to illustrate a teaching point, for example the first video demonstrates the behavior of a fuel mixed with air that is confined. This illustrates the explosive range/flammable range of this particular fuel. It is simply a mixture of air and a flammable gas.
The next video clip illustrates the hazards of an oxidizer added to a fuel mixture. Oxidizers by themselves do not burn, however when added to a flammable gas in the correct proportion they make a simply hazardous condition much worse. Compare the level of fire and noise in this video with the prior video and note the difference.
The next video demonstrates the properties of a flammable gas in ambient air mixed in an exact proportion. The mixture is contained in a lexan chamber with vent relief provided by the foil roof. Ignition is provided electronically and is activated at several different times during the addition of the flammable gas. This video demonstrates the use of a properly calibrated gas detector that was bump tested just prior to use. The test is conducted in a large room that is well ventilated. This video is being edited to reduce it's length.
